Forest deer and fawn on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A stag and a fawn walk through a dense forest of green-leaved trees, with wildflowers and foliage along the lower edge. The shading is soft and detailed, with fine linework in the leaves and fur. Bright greens, browns and touches of pink and purple dominate, and the scene wraps around the upper arm and onto the shoulder.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Tobin had been counting the same stumps for an hour when the stag stepped out of the beech shadow, unhurried, its antlers combed with ivy. Behind it, a fawn kept to the flattened grass as if someone had told it the grass was safe. Tobin set down his billhook. In Ostia, his mother had always said the woods belonged to whoever could walk them quietly, and he had never managed quiet.

The stag stopped where the path bent under the oaks and looked at him, not at the axe or the sack of hazelnuts, but at his hands. The fawn pressed its nose into a clump of white-petalled stitchwort, then lifted its head toward a sound in the thicket. Tobin heard it too: the heavy, practised tread of the overseer's men, who had been felling timber for the new road and had orders to bring back whatever the forest would give them. He could have shouted. Instead he picked up a fistful of fallen nuts and rolled them across the ground toward the fawn, slowly, the way his grandmother had fed the hens.
The stag watched the nuts roll. Then it turned and led its fawn off the path, through the pink-flowered brambles and into the green dark where the trees grew close enough to swallow sound. When the men came crashing round the bend they found only a boy on a stump, peeling a hazelnut, and a line of hoofprints that went nowhere.
"Seen anything?" the foreman asked.
Tobin cracked the shell between his teeth. "Only the trees," he said, and meant it.
