Stag in a pine forest on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large stag with a full set of antlers stands in tall grass, framed by pine trees and misty forest fading into the background. The linework is soft and the shading is built up in layers of black and grey, giving the animal and trees a sense of depth. The composition fills the upper arm, with the deer centred and the forest wrapping around it.

You have the ovens lit by half four, and the flour still hangs in the cold yard like breath. The stag is standing by the bin store again, the same one with the broken tine, its head level with the window you use to check the proof. You have stopped telling Morag about it. She only laughs and says the deer have been coming down off the Cairn since her grandmother's time, eating the windfall apples and whatever crusts you leave out.

Today you open the back door with a tray of morning rolls in your hands and he does not run. He lifts his head, ears turning like a pair of bellows, and looks at you the way the old men at the bus shelter look at the weather. Behind him the pines are black against a sky going the colour of skimmed milk, and the mist sits low in the trees as if someone has rubbed it into the paper with a thumb.
You set the tray on the step. You don't go back in for a cloth or a bucket. You stand with your hands floured to the wrist and wait, because the bread is ready and nothing in the world is so urgent it can't spare a minute. He takes three steps, stops, takes two more, and stoops to the crust nearest the bottom step, the long grass bending around his legs.
When Morag comes through at six with the till key, you're still standing there. She sees the empty tray, the stag gone back into the trees, and you with your hands held out in front of you as if you're waiting to be given something back. 'Well,' she says, 'he's had the best of us, then.' You go in and put the kettle on. Outside, the frost is burning off the grass in grey ribbons, and the forest keeps its own counsel.
