Her father had built the ship's compass housing in a yard at Padstow, and she had never forgiven him for choosing the sea over her mother's bed. He had died the winter she was twelve, still owing her a sentence of apology. Inside the lid of the box he had carved a ring of small round holes like portholes, a diamond at the heart, and spokes between them that spread like the rays of a sun that had forgotten how to set.
At two bells the wind backed and the swell went glassy. Ada carried the box below, unscrewed the lid and worked the old brass pins loose with a marlinspike. Beneath the diamond she found a folded paper, soft as cloth from the damp, written in her father's square hand: Ada, I was wrong about the bed. The sea was never the reason. She read it twice by the swinging lamp, then sat with it against her knee until the watch changed.
In the morning she stitched the lid back with waxed twine and laid the paper flat under the glass, where the needle could look at it. The mate asked what she wanted for the work. Nothing, she said. The card swung and settled north, and for once she let the ship keep its own course.
