Mandala and feather dreamcatcher design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A vertical design with a large dotwork mandala at the top, from which hang feathers, stylised stars and a small cluster of birds. Below, two butterflies sit along a line of arrows, with a further small butterfly at the base. The linework is fine and black, with stippled dot shading in the mandala and feathers, and the design is set on a plain white background.

Come in under the awning, the lot of you, before the rain takes your hats. Mind the drip. I'll tell you about Nessa Corran, who sold dreamcatchers from a barrow by the fish hall the year the river came up over the cobbles.

She wove them the old way, a willow hoop, sinew and blue wool, and at the centre a ring of stitches so fine you needed a glass to count them. Every morning she hung a fresh one on the hook above her head. The gulls hated them. The children never did, because children know a bad dream when they see one coming up the road, and they always bought the small ones with the star knots.
One wet Thursday a boy came off the ferry with a cough and a dog with no name. He asked for the biggest catcher she had, the one with feathers hanging low like a fringe of rain. She said it wasn't for sale. He said he had three coins and a tin whistle. She laughed, told him to keep his whistle, and said he could pay her by sleeping.
Next morning the market was still grey, but there were pale butterflies stitched to the awning as if someone had pinned them there. Nessa swore they'd crept out of her thread. Then a flock of small black birds came down onto the arrow line of her bench and sat there, counting the feathers. The boy slept through the storm that night, and the net never went back on the hook. Now mind the step, and tell the man at the gate I'm not finished.
