Dreamcatcher cross with feathers and vines

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A cross-shaped design built from fine black linework, with a dreamcatcher at the centre and feathers hanging from the arms. Swirling vines with small leaves and tendrils wind along the cross and extend outwards. The image is a plain white background with no shading, showing only the outline design.

You hang the coats on brass hooks at the Marlow Ballroom in Saltcombe, and by the third waltz you can tell which men will come back for theirs. The ones who dance badly always return for their hats. The ones who dance well forget their gloves on purpose, so they have a reason to see you again.

Dessa, the singer with the chipped front tooth, leaves a willow hoop on your counter one wet Thursday. She has bound it with grey feathers and a tangle of vine she cut from the fence behind the bandstand. Keep this for me, she says, I'll be back for it before the lamps go out in September. You string the web of waxed thread the way she showed you, so that bad dreams catch in the knots and only the good ones find the hole in the middle.

September comes and the hoop hangs between a navy overcoat and a child's wool mac, turning slightly whenever the door opens. On the last night of the season a stranger in a borrowed suit asks for it by the name Dessa wrote on the ticket. He says she took the milk train north and left no forwarding address, only instructions to give the hoop to whoever stayed longest at the cloakroom.

You look past him at the band still playing to empty chairs, and you let him take it. Its shadow crosses the floor as he turns it in the light, a small dark web where the dancers' feet should be. You keep the ticket stub with her name on it, and you never learn whether the bad dreams stayed in the knots or simply went home with him.
