Four colourful sugar skull designs

Colour · Flash

The image shows four sugar skull (calavera) illustrations in a 2 by 2 arrangement, each with a decorated cranium, patterned eye sockets and a toothy grin. Each skull has bold black outlines with detailed scrollwork, flowers, hearts and keyhole motifs in pink, purple, blue, yellow and green. The skulls sit on a soft beige gradient background, with a rose design across the top of the bottom-right skull.

Mrs Okonedo at the marquee ordered forty of them for the Day of the Dead supper, and she wanted every one different. For three nights you painted nothing but eyes: a marigold in one, a blue rosette in the next, and then a keyhole cut into a pink heart, because her husband went out on the Maria Dolores one March and never came back to the slip. You painted that one twice. She never asked you to.

At the marquee the lanterns are already strung between the masts of the old lifeboat shed. You set the skulls out in rows on the trestle, and the pink ones catch the light first. Mrs Okonedo lifts the keyhole skull, turns it over in her palms and laughs in a way that makes her hands shake. "He would have hated all this," she says, and then, more quietly, "Put that one at the front, love. Where the boats can see it."
