A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okonedo had signed off nineteen of the twenty skulls by Tuesday, but the twentieth sat on her desk like a dropped glove. Number twenty, the one with the bobbed hair and round spectacles, had come from a freelancer who never sent a second proof. Gwen, the print manager at Shipley Litho, kept sliding it back across the table with a biro mark on one cheekbone.

"It's the glasses," Gwen said. "Nobody puts glasses on a sugar skull."

Mrs Okonedo pulled the file up on the old Mac and zoomed until the lenses filled the screen. Someone had patterned them with tiny marigolds, petal by petal, the way a grandmother might crochet a doily while the radio played. "Somebody did," she said. "Look at the little hearts on the bridge. Who draws hearts on a bridge unless they mean it?"

They argued through two cups of tea and a packet of custard creams. In the end they printed all twenty at the same size, pinned the proof to the corkboard by the loading bay, and left it there. The forklift drivers started calling number eighteen the Mayor because of his moustache, and number nineteen the Birthday Cake because of its candles. Nobody called number twenty anything at all.

On the last morning before the run went out, Gwen found the proof turned face to the wall. She left it that way. The poster went to the printer in Halifax with the glasses still in it.
