The sugar had to be dry before anyone touched it, and Tía Rosa never let Marisol forget it. Every October, from the first cold morning, the table in the courtyard was cleared of everything but the moulds, a bowl of white sugar, a jar of meringue powder and a pair of paper scissors with a cracked handle. Marisol's job was always the eyes.

The eye flowers were the hardest. Rosa showed her how to cut each one of red, blue and gold through its middle, so the two halves could be pressed on separately, one curl at a time, and the skull would not crack when the dough was turned. "A whole thing is only stubborn," she said. "Split it and it will sit where you put it." Marisol thought this was nonsense until the year the baker's skull came out of the mould with one eye sliding down its cheek, and Rosa simply cut the other eye in half, gave him four petals instead of two, and laughed until she had to sit on the step.

On the night of the second of November, the candles were lit at the grave on the hill, and Marisol set the last skull on the cloth beside her aunt's photograph. It had a rose on its forehead and a red jewel where a tooth should be. She had cut its eyes in two, the way she had been taught, so the petals would hold. She left the scissors open on the cloth beside it, one blade turned toward the candle, as though someone might still need them.
