The swallows came back to the Marine Ballroom every April, the same week the band lost its first trumpeter to gout and Mr Pryce started talking about selling. They nested in the iron ribs above the balcony, and by Saturday night their chicks were shrieking from the rafters louder than the saxophones.

I took the coats that summer. I also had a rule about the birds: nobody swept the pale specks off the parquet under the nests until the last brood had gone. Mr Pryce called this sentiment. To me it was arithmetic. A swallow remembers the door it was born under and comes back to it, so you did not want to be the one who made that door unwelcome.
Teddy Marsh came in August to fix the sprung boards and stayed for the last dance. He had carpenter's hands and a Bristol accent he hid when he was nervous, and he asked me to waltz beneath the balcony while the band played something slow and half out of tune. "They'll be off soon," he said, looking up. "Where to?" I asked. "South, I'd think. Somewhere warm they don't have to pay for." He said it like an offer, and I let it sit there between us.
Next morning the telegraph wire outside was crowded with birds, shuffling and chattering, and then they rose together and banked low over the promenade in a long slanting line, the big ones first and the smallest last. Teddy's van was already gone from the car park. The boards under the balcony were dry. I swept them myself that afternoon, every fleck, and kept the coats.
