Hummingbird and flower sketch
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A hummingbird with outstretched wings hovers beside an open five-petalled flower, its long beak reaching toward the bloom. The drawing uses loose pen linework and hatching, with shading built up in the wings, body and flower centre. It is shown in black ink on a plain white background, with a slender stem and two leaves sweeping down the lower half of the composition.

Nell had counted the hummingbird's visits for three weeks before she told anyone, and the tally was in pencil on the back of the seed catalogue nailed beside the kitchen door. Forty-one. The bird came to the trumpet flower at the forest edge, where the last cottages gave way to beech and bracken, and it hung there with its wings a blur, too quick for the eye to hold.

Her brother Tom said it was a moth. Her father, who had cleared that edge with a billhook for thirty years, said nothing at all. He only looked at the tangle of bramble where the stem ran up out of the leaf litter and told her not to pick it.
She did not pick it. On the forty-second morning she sat on the stile with a cold cup of tea and waited, and the bird came down the long slant of light between the trees, beak first, as if it were following a thread only it could see. It touched the flower's throat and held there. Nell found she was holding her breath the way you do in church.
When she went home she drew it on the back of the catalogue, under the tallies, the wings in quick scribbled strokes because she had no other way to hold them still. Tom saw the page, laughed, and said it looked like a stick with a fright. She let him. The next morning the flower had dropped its petals onto the path and the bird was gone, but the stem still stood with two leaves reaching for nothing, and she left the gate open so that whatever came back could find it.
