Flying birds above a vertical script word

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A black design on a plain white background shows four bird silhouettes in flight, spaced diagonally and rising upwards. Below them, a single vertical script word is drawn in thin, flowing linework, with a looping tail at the base. The image is in solid black ink with no shading or colour, and the composition is centred with generous white space around it.

Dear Nell,

The gulls came off the Stacks again this morning, four of them, and went straight up over the chapel roof as if someone had called them. Dad would have said they were seeing the weather before we did. I stood on the step with the milk going cold in my hands and watched them until they were only specks above the wind turbine, which I know you hate, so I will not mention it again.

The ferry is late. Mrs Pryce says it is always late in the month the tide turns, and that the boat only runs to a timetable written by someone who has never been seasick. I have started to think she is right about most things. I finished painting the boathouse door yesterday, the old green gone grey with salt, and I wrote the word down the frame in white, the way Mam used to write our names on the lunchboxes, tall and looping, with the tail curling round at the bottom like a rope being coiled.

It rained in the night, so some of the letters have run. I thought you would want to know. I did not repaint them. You can still see them from the water, if you ever come back by sea, and you will understand that I was not sitting here waiting for you to come home. I was only making sure the door still said what it was for.
