Four whimsical animal line drawings with dotwork shading
Dotwork · Mixed · Flash
A four-panel grid of pen drawings on paper, each showing a whimsical animal design. The panels include a fox holding an umbrella and wearing a striped scarf, a fox curled in a teacup with a tea bag, a dog with a spotted body and a small bird on its head, and a bird with patterned wings. The linework is black, with stippled dotwork shading and touches of red and blue ink, and the grey pen and marker sit on the page at the top edges of the photos.

The fox is already on Platform Four when you arrive, umbrella hooked over one arm, scarf knotted twice against the cold. You have never known it to take a train. It stands at the yellow line the way other commuters stand, reading the departures board with its ears flat, and every few minutes it glances back at the tea trolley as though the trolley owes it money.

The trolley belongs to a bird who calls herself the guard's sister and sells only one thing: tea in a china cup with a sprig of leaves painted round the rim. She pours it with the tea bag still in, a red heart stamped on the string, and tells you the fox has been waiting for the same train since the old timetable was printed. You ask her which timetable. She shrugs and dusts a saucer with one wing.
When the 7.42 finally groans in, the fox does not board. It climbs into the teacup on the bench, folds its tail over its nose and goes very still, the way a thing does when it has decided the journey is over. The spotted dog from the waiting room lolls its head out from under the seat, sighs at the pair of you, and settles as if this is the most ordinary arrangement in the world.
You drink your tea. It is stewed and far too sweet, and it is exactly what you needed. Outside, the snowflakes keep drifting the wrong way, very slowly, and the board clicks over to read CANCELLED in red. You leave the cup where it is, the tea bag still steeping, and take the umbrella off the bench, because somebody has to walk out into the weather.
