Stiletto heel with banner quote
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a high heeled shoe with a dagger-like shape and drips at its base, set against three curled banners carrying short phrases. The linework is bold and even, with simple hatching on the banner edges and heel, and no colour is used. The design is centred on a plain white sketchbook page, with a pen lying across the top right corner.

The stilettos came into the shop on a wet Tuesday, one heel wrapped in a chip paper and the other in a tea towel, as if someone had been trying to stop it bleeding on the bus. My father mended shoes on this same bench for forty years and had a rule about stilettos: never trust a heel you can't see the bottom of. I could see the bottom of these. The tip was bright steel, and it had been driven into something hard enough to bend it back on itself.

Above the till hangs the chalk board he painted and I've never had the nerve to wipe. BOYS ONLY WANT LOVE IF IT'S TORTURE, in his capitals, a line he'd copied off a Blackpool rock stick. He thought it was the funniest thing ever said about footwear. When I was small I took it for a warning. Now I think it was a price list.
I pulled the tip, cleaned the grit out with a bradawl and a wire brush, and found a little brass plate stamped with a maker's name nobody has heard of since the seventies. Under the plate someone had scratched two initials with a pin and a date from a year I don't remember. The owner left a ten pound note and a first name written on the docket, and said she'd collect on Friday. She didn't say how she'd come to walk so far in shoes that needed a new tip. I didn't ask.
On Friday the shoes were still on the shelf. I'd fitted a new tip, a touch sharper than the old, and set the pair side by side under the lamp. Nobody came. I left the board as it was. Some things you don't wipe off, you just learn to walk round.
