Geometric watercolour stag head design

Geometric · Mixed · Flash

A stag or deer head in profile is drawn in black ink with loose coral and teal watercolour washes, with splashes of red and green across the paper. The antlers are faceted and geometric, filled with translucent green, while the face is softened by wet watercolour edges. Faint pencil construction lines and circles sit around the head, and the plain white paper is shown at an angle on a dark surface.

The lamp over the bench hums, and rain on the skylight keeps time with the annealer. Gus left his drawings in the flat drawer under the gas meter, pencil circles and stags built from triangles, every one with the same tilted eye. I found the sheet at two in the morning, when the glass warehouse on Cowcaddens Road had gone quiet.

The stag was pinned to the back of an old commission ledger, half finished in watercolour. Coral for the face, teal bleeding into the cheek where the water had run before the paint set. Red spattered across the paper as if he'd flicked the brush at the wall. He never explained the red. He said a drawing should look like it was still deciding.

On Thursday Mr Okafor asked me to match a green for the antler panes in the chapel window, and nothing in the stock came close. I took the sheet to the bench and held it against the leaded light. The faceted shapes lined up with the cames the way his circles lined up with the skull. The lead had been drawn first. The stag came after.

I cut the last pane at dawn, teal glass the colour of wet slate, and set it beside the coral. Gus rang at eight from a number I didn't recognise. I didn't tell him I'd found the drawing. I said the green was right, and he said he knew it would be, and behind him I could hear a kettle going on that he never switched off.
