Four woodland animals filled with flowers

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

A white background sheet shows four animals drawn in black linework: a hedgehog, a squirrel, a fox and a snail. Each animal has its body or tail filled with dense clusters of orange, yellow, red and purple flowers and leaves. The animals are spaced evenly in a grid, with black outlines and fine shading on the bodies contrasting with the colourful floral fills.

Nobody in Hollin Bottom could remember a frost in September, but the old woman at the mill said one was coming, and she said the flowers would not survive it. So on the last warm evening the hedgehog went first, with marigolds and late asters pinned among his spines like a bonnet. He did not look back to see whether anyone was following.

The squirrel came next, her tail stuffed with rosehips and the orange dahlias she had taken from the vicar's garden, which she would tell you she had only borrowed. The fox carried golden rod along his flank, a long swaying mane of it, and he was careful with it because it was the one thing he had ever been trusted to keep. The snail went last, of course. Her shell held the heaviest load, a heap of red anemones and yellow chrysanthemums pressed together like a loaf, and she did not hurry, because hurrying had never got anybody anywhere on that hill.

Halfway up, the wind came off the moor and took the squirrel's dahlias clean into a ditch. She stood on the path and wailed. The hedgehog, who had been right about nearly everything since he was a pup, said nothing at all. The fox went down into the ditch on his belly and fetched them out one by one. The snail caught up at dusk and found them all laid out in a row along the stone wall, dry as bread, with the fox asleep beside them.

At the top they set the flowers on the cold stone for the old woman, who had died in the spring and could not come. They stayed through the night with their backs to the wind. By morning the petals had gone white at the edges, but every bloom was still there, and so were the four of them, curled against the stone as if they had been poured there. The frost never came down that far again, or so the people of Hollin Bottom say.
