Howling wolf with roses flash design

Realism · Mixed · Flash

A wolf is drawn in profile with its head raised and muzzle open, as if howling. Fine hatched and stippled linework builds up the fur in grey tones. Pink, lilac and pale yellow roses, rosebuds and grey-shaded leaves and a thin stem sit below the wolf's jaw on a plain white background.

At half three the wholesale flower market smells of wet cardboard and cut stems, and you are the only one on the loading bay who hears the howl come down off the ridge above the ring road. Derek has his earphones in. The forklift beeps its reversing warning, and the pallets of pink and lilac roses from the Dutch lorry slide under the strip lights one after another. You tell yourself it is a fox, or a car alarm stretched thin across the dark.

It comes again, longer, and this time the shape is standing on the low wall of the car park opposite, head back, throat working against the orange sky. It is no dog. The coat is the colour of a pewter spoon, and the lamplight catches in the hackles along its neck. You have only ever seen wolves behind the glass at the zoo, and this one looks at the trolley of bruised buds the way you look at a train you have just missed.

You wheel the trolley across the tarmac and set one stem on the wall. The wolf lowers its head and sniffs, then takes the rose gently in its teeth and trots off down the slope towards the river, petals dragging a pale trail behind it. Nobody else has noticed. The invoice in the morning is one bucket short, and Derek only shrugs and asks whether you want the kettle on.

You still work the late shift. Sometimes, when the lorries are quiet, the howl comes down from the ridge, and you stand in the cold with your hands in your pockets and answer it under your breath.
