A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The winter the herring failed, the boats of Skerrow Haven came home empty three weeks running, and old Maren Tulloch said it was because the sea had lost its way. Her grandson Iain didn't believe in sea-ways, but he believed in hunger, and when the schoolmaster's wife offered a shilling to anyone who could bring back a salmon from the far loch, he took his father's gaff and walked.

The far loch lay under a ridge of black rock where the wind never settled. On the third morning, with frost on his eyelashes, he saw a stag come down to drink. It was not a red deer of the hills. Its coat was the colour of a bruise just before it heals, blue at the shoulder and running to rose at the flank, and its antlers branched wider than the rowan by the kirk. It stood in the reeds and looked at him the way the minister looks at a man who has come to confess something small.

Iain did not raise the gaff. He said he was hungry, which was true, and the stag lowered its head to the water and then, without fuss, leapt over the shallows and was gone up the ridge in three bounds, each one higher than the last, as if the rock were a staircase only it could see.

He came home with no fish. But on the quay the next morning the nets were heavy, and Maren, seeing his face, nodded as though he had told her the news himself. The shilling he never collected. He kept the gaff, and every spring after he walked to the far loch to watch the ridge, and never once again did the sea lose its way.
