The fox came over the orchard wall the morning after the last frost, as if someone had sent for it. My father had set a trap along the apple row, and I was the one who found it sprung and empty, the bait gone and a tuft of rust-coloured fur snagged on the wire. I told nobody but Mrs Pryce at the shop, because she was the only person in Hadley who wouldn't laugh at a girl who talked to animals.

The cherry tree by the back gate had come into blossom all at once that week, pink on every twig, and a bluebird had built in the fork low enough for me to see her from the kitchen step. She had laid one pale blue egg. Every evening the fox sat on the old wood pile beneath the branch, close enough to touch the nest, and watched her with his chin on his paws. My father wanted him dead. I said that a fox who would sit that patiently for a bird deserved a second look, and he told me I was soft, and went to fetch the gun anyway.

I was up before the light on the Thursday. The fox was already there, and the bird was on his shoulder, bold as a sparrow in a churchyard, pecking at a petal that had landed in his fur. Neither of them moved when I came out. My father stood at the back door with the gun unloaded in his hands and said nothing at all. By the next week there were two chicks in the nest, and the fox still sat under the cherry tree, but now he had a blossom caught in the russet fur of his back, and nobody in the village had the heart to brush it off.
