Snarling wolf and red rose on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A snarling wolf head with bared teeth fills the upper part of the design, with a large red rose beneath its jaw and smaller red rosebuds curling along the right side. The wolf is shaded in greys and browns with a yellow-gold eye and fur highlights, while the roses use bold red fills and dark outlines. Orange and gold petals and crescent-shaped arcs frame the composition against the skin of the lower leg.

And so the wolf came down Hob's Lane with a red rose caught in its teeth, and the dogs of Ashcombe went quiet under their porches, because every dog in the valley knew that smell. Roses don't grow in Wyvelle Wood. Everyone knows that. So where had this one come from?

Mistress Greaves kept the last garden on the edge of the trees, and for three winters she had been leaving a scrap of mutton on the wall each dusk, though she'd have told you she was doing no such thing. The wolf had grey in its ruff and a gold eye that caught the lamplight like a coin pressed into mud. It never touched the meat while she watched. It only looked at her, long and patient, the way a bailiff looks at a debt.
Then came the spring the briars bloomed on the wrong side of the wall, climbing out of the wood itself, thick and red as sealing wax. Mistress Greaves cut one for the kitchen table, and the thorns drew a bead of blood that would not stop, and by midnight she understood what the wolf had been waiting for. It had never wanted the mutton. It wanted her to keep her word.
So she walked into the trees with the rose in her hand, the crescent moon hanging over the oaks like a hook, and she said plainly what she owed. The wolf opened its jaws. Out fell no bone, only a bundle of gold and orange petals, and inside them a single rosebud, closed tight as a fist. Plant it, the look in its eye said. Mind it. Come back when it opens.
I have never seen it open, mind you. But I have seen the wall, and the red bushes spilling over it, and I have never once in my life been short of mutton.
