Two wolves with peonies on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Two wolf heads sit side by side across both thighs. The left wolf is black and grey with red eyes and bared teeth, and the right wolf is pale blue-grey with a gold headpiece set with a turquoise stone. Large peony blooms in pink, red and orange, with dark green leaves, frame both wolves.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The black wolf came out of the scrub first, at the point where the road to Ashgrove Wells gives up and turns to gravel. I was the one who stopped, which my mother said later was the whole trouble with me. Its eyes caught the headlights and burned red, and then the pale one stepped out behind it with a gold chain lying across its brow, as if it had been invited somewhere and was running late.

Nobody in the valley had seen wolves since the dam went up. The black one hopped onto my bonnet and showed me its teeth, not as a threat exactly, more the way a man checks the weather before he sets out. The pale one walked round the front and lay down across the white line. Peonies I had never seen in that country were pushing up through the cracks in the tarmac, great blowsy heads the colour of sunsets, and they bent towards the pale wolf as if it were the sun.

They explained it in a mixture of growls and sighs. For a hundred years they had taken turns walking the water line between the wells, and this year the black one had gone to the town and the pale one had stayed to hold the road, and neither would say which of them had got the worse deal. I offered them the passenger seat. The black one refused, then climbed in anyway and sat with its nose against the glass like a child on a long journey.

At the gate of Ashgrove Wells they both got down. The pale one turned, and the stone in its headpiece caught the first light and threw a small blue coin onto the dust. The black one looked back at me once, then trotted off after its sister, and behind them the peonies folded their petals shut for the day.
