Fox and flowers on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A fox in profile, looking up and to the left, fills the lower half of the tattoo, with soft shading along its fur and a pale wash of cloud-like swirls behind it. Green leaves, an orange bloom and a large gerbera-style flower in yellow and pink run up the leg, with a small red maple leaf near the top edge. Bright colour dominates the design against the surrounding skin, and the composition wraps around the thigh.

In the fishing village of Carrick Vane, the autumn boats came in heavy with mackerel, and the fox that lived beneath the chandlers' shed came down each evening to see what the tide had left. The old women called her Brannoc and fed her scraps from their aprons, though nobody remembered who had first given a fox a man's name.

Each morning the harbourmaster's daughter, Nell Harrow, carried sea-wall flowers up from the allotments in a tin bucket: gerberas the colour of a late sunset, marigolds, and one orange bloom nobody in the village could name. Nell swore the fox waited for her at the top of the steps. It always looked up and to the left, towards the hill road, as if someone were coming down it.
The winter the road washed out, nobody came. Nell kept bringing flowers anyway. In April a red maple leaf, too early by a month, blew against the wall, and when she lifted it she found the fox had dug a hollow beneath the stones and lined it with grey wool from the top farm's sheep. Tucked in the wool was her old tin bucket, empty, and a row of seeds sprouting green in the damp.
By midsummer the wall ran with colour from the steps to the harbour, and the fox no longer looked up the hill. She slept in the warm stones with her nose towards the sea, and Nell left her bread and the first flower of each morning, and that was the end of the waiting.
