Longhorn skull and roses on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A longhorn skull with curved horns is the central subject, surrounded by three rose blooms and several leaves, with two roses at the top and two lower down near the knee. The linework is fine and dark, and the skull and petals are shaded in soft grey gradients to give them volume. The image is in black and grey and is framed close on the thigh, with the edge of denim shorts visible at the top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The steer had been dead three days before anyone thought to tell Ruth, and by then the crows had done the sensible part of the job. She found it at the bottom of the long field where the hedge gives out, the horns still wide enough to hang a washing line from, the skull bleached to the colour of old candle wax.

Her father leaned on the gate when she brought it up the lane in a feed sack. Sell it to the man from Ludlow, he said, the one who buys bones for the antique shops in Shrewsbury. Ruth didn't answer. She stopped instead at the bramble by the gate, the one her mother had planted the year before she died, its roses long gone to hips and a few brown leaves still hanging on through the frost. The hips were bright as cherries against the grey hedge.

She carried the skull into the kitchen and set it on the table, then scrubbed it with a nailbrush under the cold tap. The water ran pink from the sockets and then ran clear, and the bone came up smooth and cool under her thumbs, every whorl of the horn cut fine as pencil lines. Her father watched from the doorway with his cap in his hands and said nothing about the price.

At dusk she took the fork out to the foot of the bramble. The ground was hard as a step and it took her the best part of an hour to open a hole deep enough. She set the skull in with the horns turned toward the lane and packed the earth round it with her boots. When the thaw came, the roses would have something to climb. Her father appeared at the gate with a bucket of hot water and stood beside her in the cold, and neither of them asked her why.
