Fox profile in a circle with lettering on chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A fox's head in profile faces left inside a circular border, with words set around the rim of the circle. The linework is fine and uniform, with some light hatching on the fur and no shading beyond that. The tattoo is in black ink only, and the composition sits centrally on the upper chest.

The lift in Ward Seven has jammed between floors again, and you are the only porter still awake who knows which panel to thump. Sister Drummond has gone to the on-call room with her shoes off, and the fox is sitting on the linen trolley as though it has been rostered in for the night.

It came in through a broken vent last February, thin as a coat hanger, and it has been turning up ever since whenever the corridors go quiet. Nobody else sees it the way you do. Tonight it trots ahead of you to the service stairs and stops at every landing to make sure you are still following, the way Mo used to when you were both new and frightened of the mortuary lift.
On the fourth floor a man in a paper gown sits on the bottom step of the stairwell, a plastic cup of water shaking in his hands. You kneel beside him. The fox settles on the step above, tail wrapped round its feet, and nobody mentions the drip stand he has abandoned in the corridor. He drinks. You hold the cup steady until he can manage it alone. Twenty minutes later the bell on Bay C is still ringing, and you find you do not mind.
When you finally reach the ground floor the lift doors are open and empty, and there is a smudge of dust on the mirror where something small has sat. The fox is already out in the loading bay, sodium light on its back, looking over its shoulder at you with the patience of an animal that knows it will be followed. You go after it, and the night keeps its own counsel.
