The drawing had been tucked inside a timetable on bench seven, and it was the only thing in the lost property tray that wasn't a glove or a dented umbrella. You turned it over with the end of a pen. A unicorn stood on a square of grass no bigger than a bus ticket, two sprigs leaning beside it, and three dots that were either bees or the sort of thing a child draws when the real bees have wandered off.

Nobody claimed it that week. On the Thursday, a girl in a yellow raincoat came to the hatch and asked whether anyone had handed in a horse. You said it was a unicorn. She looked at you the way people look at a clerk who has got the small things wrong, then told you the horse had a horn, which was the whole point, and that her grandad had drawn it on the back of his ticket the winter he waited here every Friday for the last train from Carlisle.

She said he had always insisted the grass was the part that mattered, because a unicorn needs somewhere to stand that isn't just platform. You asked where he was now. She said he had got onto the train one Friday and had not got off again at Hollin Cross, a sentence she had clearly practised, and she did not cry, though you wished she had, so that you would know what to do with your hands.

You gave her the drawing and she folded it into her coat without looking at it. After she left, you took the pen from behind your ear and added one more sprig beside the grass, because the little square had looked lonely with only two. At seventeen forty-two the Carlisle train pulled out, and you watched its lamp on the last carriage until the bend took it.
