An animal head with long pointed ears and a long snout faces right, filled with stippled dotwork shading and outlined in fine black linework. It sits inside an oval frame edged with small leaf sprigs, with a partial line of Greek lettering above and a partly visible tattoo at the bottom edge. The image is in black and grey, with the design centred on the forearm against a dark background.

Dear Eleni, the oven was lit before the cockerel, so I am writing this on a flour sack by the back door while the dough proves. Your father's donkey came up the lane at half four with the sacks from the mill, long ears first through the mist like a pair of oars, and she stopped at the gate as though she had an appointment with me.

Father Yannis says she is nearly thirty and has carried every loaf this village has eaten since the war. Yesterday the man from the co-operative offered him a van for her, and Father said he would think about it, which means no. I have been thinking about it too, all night, kneading the same dough over and over until my wrists ached and the flour got into the creases of my knuckles.

This morning she ignored the van parked in the yard and pushed her nose into the basket where I keep the first loaf of each day, the one we give to whoever passes first. I broke off the heel and gave it to her. She chewed slowly, looking at me sideways the way Mama used to when she was deciding whether I was telling the truth.

So the van can carry the flour, but the donkey stays. I am teaching the boy to shape the sesame rings with his left hand because she seems to trust him more. Come at Easter and bring your grey pencils. I want you to draw her properly, with a frame round her head and little leaves along the edge, like the saints on the church wall, so that she is kept. Love, Sofia
