Close-up of a needle working on fresh dark blue-grey linework on skin, with a small bead of blood along one line.

Fresh tattoo being worked with a needle

Black and grey · Photo

A close-up shows a metal needle grouping at the edge of the frame, tracing dark blue-grey linework across pinkish skin. A thin line of fresh blood sits beside one stroke, and the design is cropped too tightly to identify its subject. The shallow focus blurs the background into soft tones of pink and dark grey.

That spring the harbour master brought us the survey of the Scarn reef, twelve sheets soaked through with spray. He wanted the new channel marked before the Ada Mae went out on the tide. I sat at the trestle with the lamp hissing and traced each sounding with a steady hand, though my fingers stiffened in the cold that came off the water. The nib caught my thumb once, a bead of red on the paper's edge, and I laughed because it looked like a buoy someone had dropped.

The Ada Mae came home on the Friday with every man aboard and her hull unscratched. The harbour master stood at the foot of our stairs and said the line had held. My mother, hearing it from her chair, asked me to read the bearings back to her. I did, one by one, and she nodded at the fourth and said that was the promise kept.

I still have that chart. The blue channel runs true beside a faint rust-coloured dot where my nib slipped, and I have never once wiped it away.
