Tattoo machine at work on skin
Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a gloved hand holding a tattoo machine with a metal grip and tube, working on skin beside a dark, freshly inked area. The linework and solid black shading are visible at the needle point, with dark ink residue scattered across the skin. The image is in black and white, and the composition is tightly framed on the hands and the tattoo in progress.

Then Eddie Crane came up the lane from the forest with holly tucked in his cap and a grin that said he had already decided. "Your dad said you'd do it," he said. She heard her father's voice in the words, low and certain, and she knew she would.
The first line was the hardest. Her gloved hand shook until she set her elbow on the table and let the weight of the machine do the work, the way he had taught her: light, steady, the needle only a fraction deeper than a pencil mark. Ink settled where she guided it, and she wiped away the dark residue with a tissue again and again until the black sat exactly where she wanted it.
When she finished the shading and sat back, the room smelled of cedar smoke from the stove. Eddie studied the fresh lines in the hand mirror and asked what she would charge. She told him the truth: nothing, but he owed her a dozen eggs and the story of the night the owl took his hat. He laughed, and what surprised her was how much the sound resembled her father's.
