Frog, ice cream and skull tattoos on arms
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A woman in a fitted white t-shirt is shown from the chest down, with her arms bare and tattooed. On one upper arm there is a frog and an ice cream cone, and on the forearm below it there is a rose with leaf shapes, drawn in bold outlines with solid fills. On the other arm a shaded skull with ornamental detail sits near the elbow, and the background is an indoor room with shelves.

Past the place where the tarmac gave out, a frog called Orrin sat on the step of Mab Tennant's ice cream cart and watched the lorry drivers pay their pennies. Mab sold pink and mint cones from a tin box painted with faded blue waves, and she never once gave one away without a coin. Orrin had no coins. He had only the patience of a creature who knew the road better than anyone.

Beside the cart, through a crack in the road, a single rose grew, though nothing else would grow in that dust. Mab said it was her mother's rose and watered it from a chipped enamel jug each evening. Orrin told her what he had heard from the reeds at the wash: the rider who came along the road at dusk, bone-white on a grey mare, could not take what had been given freely, and he always came for something. Mab thanked him and went on watering.
The rider came as the sun dropped behind the mesa. He asked for a cone, and Mab handed it to him without a word. He licked it once and said it tasted of a country he had forgotten. When he reached for his purse, she shook her head and asked only that the rose be left standing through the next winter. He considered this for a long moment, then pressed a small grey stone into her palm and rode off towards the hills without looking back.
In the morning the cart was still there, but the tin box was empty and the rose had gone to seed. Orrin sat on the step, which was warm, and found the stone beside him. It had a hole through the middle, and when he held it to his eye the road ran straight through it all the way to the sea.
