Crossed fingers hand on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single-line outline of a closed hand with two fingers crossed sits on the upper arm. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with no shading or fill. The tattoo is shown against pale skin, a white t-shirt and a plain wall, with the rest of the composition kept simple.

Dear Nell,

The vet says the grey ewe will either hold on until morning or she won't, and there is nothing for me to do but sit on an upturned bucket in the lambing shed and wait. Dad's gone to bed with his cough. I've been keeping the stove stoked and listening to the wind try the shed door every few minutes, as if it has come to collect something.
You'll think I've gone soft, but I've been doing that thing you taught me when we were nine, two fingers crossed behind my back while I counted lambs through the gate. Forty-one so far. The mud has frozen into ruts that catch the boots, and the pump in the top field has iced over again, so I've carried water up in the tin bath twice today. Mum's old hens have stopped laying, which Dad says is the weather and I say is spite.
I know you think the farm is a sentence I've been serving. Maybe it is. But last week a lamb came out blue and limp, and I breathed into its mouth like a fool, and it sneezed, and I laughed so hard I cried into the straw. Tell me that's not worth a few crossed fingers.
If the grey one makes it, I'll post you a photograph of the first lamb I name after you. If she doesn't, I'll still be here, fingers crossed for spring.
Love, Jo
