Geometric triangles on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A seated person in a white t-shirt and blue jeans rests one arm on a white bed, showing a black tattoo of stacked, overlapping triangles on the forearm. The linework is fine and the triangles are partly filled with stippled dotwork shading, with a thin line extending upward from the apex. The image is softly lit, and the composition is cropped at the neck and above the knees, centring the tattoo.

The plumb line still hung from the ceiling of the Hartley Street office when I arrived, swinging a little whenever the lorries went past below. Mr Okonedo had left the drawings in a flat cabinet with a note in pencil: measure twice, then measure the shadow. I did not understand the instruction until the third night, when the streetlamp outside threw the triangle of the window frame onto the floor and I saw that its apex sat exactly beneath the rooftop aerial of the chapel opposite.

I logged it. Three stacked triangles, each smaller than the last, nested so their points lined up on one vertical axis. Dotwork filled the lowest one, so that the shadow of it looked grainy, like rain on a windscreen. The thin spike rising from the top triangle I measured at eleven centimetres, and it always pointed at the same star, which I checked against the almanac every night for a week before I believed it was not moving.

On the eighth night the cabinet was empty. The drawings had gone, and so had Okonedo's coat from its hook. In their place was a sheet of tracing paper, and on it someone had drawn the three triangles again, larger, with the spike extended until it touched the edge of the page. Beneath, in the same pencil, the words: you were never the one measuring. I folded the paper into my pocket and went out into the street, where the lamp was still making its sharp little shape on the pavement.
