Full back armoured warrior tattoo with thigh pieces
Japanese · Back · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows a man seen from behind, with a full back piece of an armoured warrior figure with a red face, green robe and gold armour, holding a sword. Smooth outlines, bold shading and clouds surround the figure, and further swirling clouds and flame-like shapes continue onto both thighs. The tattoo uses saturated green, red, gold and dark tones against a black background.

Sit down, sit down, the ten-fifteen is never before the half hour, so you may as well hear this. My grandmother told it to me on this same bench, back when the platform still had gas lamps and the signal box was run by a man with one eye and a biscuit tin full of pencils.

There was a sign painter in Leeds, Mr Thaddeus Oduya, who worked in a room above a pawnbroker's. One winter the railway commissioned him to paint a general for the waiting room wall: a red-faced man in a green silk robe, gold scale armour, and a long blade resting on his shoulder. The company wanted him fierce enough to frighten the drunks off the benches. Oduya spent three weeks on the clouds alone, painting them curling the way steam curls off a cold engine.
On the last night he found the general's blade drawn a finger's width further than he had left it. The paint was dry and nobody had been in. Next morning the 6.40 to Carlisle came in late, and the stationmaster swore that a red-faced figure stood on the down platform in the fog, one hand on his hilt, watching the rails until the train passed clean through him.
Oddly, Oduya did not touch the wall again. Some say the general still walks the down platform when the frost is hard, and that a sensible man tips his cap to him as he goes by. Mind the gap, my grandmother used to say, and mind who is watching it.
