Full back cartoon undersea scene tattoo
Back · Colour · Photo
A woman is seen from behind with her hands in her hair, showing a large back piece covering most of her back. The design is a cartoon-style undersea scene with a castle at the top, a mermaid with red hair in the centre, and sea creatures and characters around the lower back. Bold outlines and bright, saturated colour fill the whole piece against a plain grey background.

The octopus at the lost-property desk had eight arms and used every one of them to avoid meeting Marina's eye. One arm adjusted its spectacles. Another stirred a cup of kelp tea. A third stamped a form that did not need stamping, then stamped it again, while the fourth hid behind a barnacled ledger labelled LOST, FOUND, AND NOT YET DECIDED.

The fork was the trouble. It was an ordinary silver fork from a surface picnic, three tines bent like a question mark, and Marina had traded a whole month of singing lessons to a passing gull for it. She had carried it down past the coral gardens and the sleeping eel and presented it at supper like a crown. Her father, the Sea King Olvar, had looked at it, laughed until the castle windows rattled, and confiscated it for the lost-property office. That was how it had ended up on the octopus's desk.
"Give it back," she said. "I paid for it in songs." The octopus sighed, a long bubbling sigh, and tugged open a drawer with a squeak. Inside, among a hundred lost things, lay the fork, and beside it a note in careful handwriting: Returned to owner, once she has sung for the clerk. Marina sang. It was the worst song she had ever sung, all off-key whale calls and shouted verses about a boat she had never seen.
The octopus wept ink, which was apparently how octopuses laughed, and stamped the form with a flourish. Marina swam up through the castle gate with the fork clutched in her fist, past her father's trident leaning against the wall, and she was halfway to the surface before she realised she had forgotten her receipt. Behind her the octopus was already stirring a second cup of tea, and somewhere in the drawer a new fork was waiting for someone to sing for it.
