Sphynx cat and chrysanthemums on the stomach

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo covers the abdomen, showing a hairless sphynx cat head with a single closed eye, set within a dotted circle and flanked by two chrysanthemums. The linework is bold and the shading is soft grey, with a lace-like scalloped band along the lower edge. A coloured rose on the hand in the same frame adds warm peach and pink tones.

The cat came up the lane out of the snowfall on the third day of January, hairless and grey as a pebble from the beck, and Walter Ash said she was no use to a farm that had never kept a cat with manners. Ruth fed her anyway. She fed her scraps from the pail and warm milk in the chipped saucer that had been her mother's, and by the end of the week the cat had moved her bed from the stable to the rail beside the range.

The chrysanthemums in the glasshouse were the last things still flowering that winter, bronze and cream, heavy-headed against the frost on the panes. Ruth cut them every morning for the market van, and the cat sat on an upturned crate watching with one eye open and the other sealed shut, as though she had already decided how the day would go and was only waiting to be proved right.

The snow closed the lane in the second week of February. The van did not come. Walter's cough worsened, and one night Ruth sat up with him by the fire while the wind worked at the slates. At first light she went out to the glasshouse and found the cat already there, curled in the dry straw between the last pots, the flowers around her turned towards the house.

Ruth carried the best bloom up to the bedroom in a jam jar. Walter opened his eyes long enough to see the colour, then nodded at the windowsill, where the cat had come to sit with her shut eye pressed to the glass. "She'll do," he said, and it was the kindest thing anyone had said about the cat all winter.
