Every morning before the rooster, Tomas Veil lit the oven in the bakery at the bottom of Wendle Lane. His father had done the same, and his grandfather before him, and at that hour the lane still belonged to foxes and the smell of rising dough. Across the way lived a painter who kept her lamp lit all night and never drew her curtain, so Tomas could see her bent over her paper screens, brushing peonies and chrysanthemums in orange and green while the sky was still black.

One frost he drew out a tray and found that each loaf had a single petal pressed into its crust, orange as a coal. He did not eat them. He wrapped the first loaf in a cloth and carried it across the lane, and the painter opened her door before he could knock. She said nothing about the petals. She held out a brush and asked whether he could mix a green that would not turn grey when the sun came up.
He tried for a month. Each dawn he stood at her table, grinding stone and rice paste while she worked on a lady in a long robe, her hair pinned with a red comb, a fan of leaves opening behind her. The lady was never finished. Each morning the painter took one petal from the bread, and each morning the loaves came out with a little less colour, until Tomas understood that the petals had been the paint all along and the bread was what she had been paying with.
In spring the bakery sold plain white loaves and the lane was quiet. The lamp across the way went out for good. When Tomas finally climbed the stairs, he found the lady finished at last, dark-haired and calm among the green, and beneath her, in small careful brushwork, a single petal the colour of a coal.
