Roses, vines and leopard print on raised arms

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A woman with long blonde hair is photographed from behind with her arms raised and hands in her hair. Her right arm carries a sleeve of pink and red roses with green leaves and trailing vines, shaded with darker tones to give the flowers depth. A pink and brown leopard print patch sits on her left upper arm, and her back and shoulders are bare with the tattoos as the focal point.

Dear Nell,

The frost has got into the glasshouse again, so I've been wrapping the root-balls in sacking by lamplight, which is the only time Dad ever let me do anything properly. The old climber off the south wall came up in one piece in the end. Its vines had gone right through the mortar, and I had to free them from the brickwork with the hooked knife, one thorn at a time. Mrs Pargeter came to watch and said I'd make a mess of it. I didn't.

Your letter came with the carrier on Tuesday. You asked whether I'd kept the spotted cloth Mum used to throw over the sofa. I have. It's folded in the bottom drawer under the seed trays, and it smells of tallow and cloves. I'd forgotten how she laughed at Mr Rudd's cat when it stalked the cuttings, belly low, pretending to be something from a travelling menagerie. She said anything with that many spots was showing off.

On Thursday the wind dropped and the sky went the colour of pewter. I walked the rows with a bucket and cut the last of the dead heads, thinking about you on the coast road, and how the roses don't care what season it is so long as their roots stay warm. In spring I'll graft the old stock onto new rootstock, and we'll see if it takes.

Write back soon. Tell me if the baby has his teeth yet.

Love, Jo
