The dome still stands above the drowned quarter, and every dawn you climb its iron stairs to read the tide marks on the stone. Below, the old banks have become reefs, their columns furred with mussels. Your grandmother said the notes once carried the faces of dead men, and that people burned them to keep warm in the hard winters. You find one wedged in a gutter on the stairs, its green thread still bright, and you fold it into your sleeve without thinking.

The mountains to the north have crept closer each season, and the clouds gathering over them are no longer white. A trader called Pell arrives by raft with salt and tin and wants to buy the note. He laughs at it, then turns it over and asks where the rest of the money went. You tell him the coins sank with the vault doors, stacked in barrels like the ones in the old pictures. Pell says the barrels are still down there in the flooded lower floors, and that a barrel of coin is worth more than any raft.
You bargain for three days. In the end you trade him the knife your father made and a promise: he will dive for the barrels with you, and you will split the weight evenly. The first dive brings up only black silt and one coin, its rim worn smooth by the water. You rub it on your shirt and hold it up to the dome's last window. The light passes straight through the copper as though it were never there.
Pell asks what it's worth. You look out at the clouds stacking over the peaks and the city rising wet in the sun, and you say nothing. You drop the coin back into the silt, under the mussels, and climb the stairs to watch the tide turn.
