Joker portrait across a full back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large realistic portrait of the Joker covers most of the back, with a playing card reading JOKER beside a smaller face in the upper left. The shading is smooth and detailed, with heavy dark hair and a grinning mouth picked out in strong contrast. Small touches of red appear on the lips and in a tattoo on the left arm, while the rest of the piece is grey and black against the skin.

The joker has gone missing from the deck again, and Mrs Pascoe has pinned it on you before the kettle has boiled. You were on the veranda of the Sea Vista all morning, dealing patience while the wind lifted the corners, so you can hardly be blamed, but she never needs evidence. She needs a face to glare at over the breakfast tureens.

Across the bay the city keeps its chimneys smoking, a grey smear over the water that the locals call the weather's cigarette. Ferris Dunn, who has the room above yours, says the smoke is worse on Thursdays when the foundries cook their fat down. He is the only other lodger who plays for money, and he deals with the flourish of a man who once saw the inside of a casino and disliked it. On Tuesday he lost two weeks' rent to you at nap, and he has been sulking since, glaring at his own cards as if they had cheated him.
That evening the joker turns up tucked inside the frame of the hall mirror, one corner bent, a red grin drawn on its back in lipstick. Mrs Pascoe's shade, the cheap pink she wears to chapel. You understand at once that she has been sitting on the stairs, watching you lose your temper over nothing, and that she took the card for the pleasure of it.
You pocket the joker and go down to the lounge, where the card table waits under the lamp. Dunn is already shuffling. You deal him a hand, lay the wild card face up on the baize, and let him see the lipstick grin before anyone speaks. Mrs Pascoe laughs from the kitchen door, and the tide pulls at the pier as if it has heard the joke too.
