I have kept the sound packets back for the spring sowing and sent you the dahlia tubers wrapped in wet moss, which you will call my habit of hoarding. Tell the queen's steward the scarlet ones are for the east terrace only.

The poppies came up on their own along the wall where the rubble was dumped after the fire. Nobody sowed them. Their petals are thin as burnt paper, and when the wind turns they fold like a hand closing. I cut three for the kitchen table, and Marta asked whether they would last. I said poppies never last, and that is what makes them worth carrying. She laughed at me for talking like a priest.

The white ones with the red throats are doing better than anyone predicted. They face the water mill, and the swallows dive through them at dusk. Behind them the old canal banks have taken the colour of the river, teal in the early light, so that you cannot tell where the bank ends and the water starts. I have started calling that corner the Curl, after the way the stems turn back on themselves.

Send word when the violet cosmos bloom. They are the only thing I could not coax into the cold frame, so I will try once more before the frost. If the purple seed fails, I will walk to Salt Ferrow myself and beg a packet from the chandler. Your loving sister, Teodora.
