Pink flower and moth on an elbow

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A pink five-petalled flower with a black centre and red outlines sits at the middle of the image, surrounded by dark-edged green leaves with gold highlights. A green moth with an orange and black body appears below, and a fine black swirl and partial tattoos of leaves and a geometric pattern appear at the edges. Bold black outlines and flat solid fills give the piece a classic look, shown on skin with a soft, even light against a white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had been at the barrier since before the bells, and by noon the queue of carts stretched back past the willows to the ford. The guard, a heavy man called Oskar Thiel, checked each seal with the same flat patience he gave to his tea. When a green moth came in under the lamp and settled on the ledger, he flicked at it with his pen and missed.

"Leave it," Marta said. "It has a passport of its own."

He laughed, which was the first mistake of the day. The moth folded its wings, and on the open page, where the pen had left a little ink, it had walked a line of dust into the shape of a flower. Five petals, a black eye at the centre, leaves with gold along their veins. Nobody at the post had drawn it. Oskar looked at it for a long time and then stamped the page over it without a word.

The stamp came up clean, but the flower did not come off. That night the river rose, the carts were held on the far bank, and the dust-flower opened on the ledger like a shutter. Marta, who had counted crossings for nine years, watched the petals move in the lamplight and understood that whatever was written down at a border would grow there if it was true.

In the morning she carried the ledger to the water and let the flower go, a pink bloom loosed onto the current, while the moth lifted off the rail to follow it. The carts crossed at noon. Oskar kept the page, and whenever someone asked him what was wrong with the register, he said only that the ink had blossomed.
