Colour neo-traditional full sleeve of flowers and swirls running from the shoulder to the wrist of an arm.

Full sleeve of colourful flowers on an arm

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

The sleeve shows a large orange bloom at the shoulder, a purple cosmos, a white flower with pink tones and red poppies, linked by teal and green swirling foliage. The shading is smooth and blended, with bright highlights that give the petals a raised, dimensional look. The design runs vertically down the arm, with the wrist and hand visible at the bottom of the frame.

The officer at Dover turned the cardboard tube over in his gloved hands and asked what was inside. You told him: dahlia tubers, a tray of gerbera seedlings wrapped in wet moss, and a paper packet of cosmos seed your grandmother had saved in a Huntley and Palmers tin. He held the tube up to the strip light as though something else might be hiding in it. Behind you the lorry idled, its diesel breath curling low across the tarmac.

Your grandmother had kept poppies in the stony strip behind the chapel above Vrisa, where the goats couldn't reach them. Every August she'd cut them for the priest and drop the spent heads into your apron pocket, saying they'd come back anyway if you were careless enough. You had been careless enough. That was the reason for the tube, the damp moss and the certificate folded in a plastic wallet that now had to be read, slowly, line by line.

He read it twice. Then he asked what the orange one was called, the big open one with the yellow middle. Gerbera, you said. He nodded as though that settled something. His mother, he said, had kept them on the kitchen windowsill in Leeds, where the sun came in sideways at teatime and the glass ran with condensation. He stamped the paperwork without looking at it again and handed the wallet back.

You drove off with the tube strapped into the passenger seat. In the wing mirror the port shrank to a grey smudge, and beyond it the country rolled out green and unhurried. You kept one hand on the tube the whole way to London, as if the petals might still open at the next roundabout.
