Full sleeve of red poppies and daisies
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full sleeve of flowers runs from the upper arm down towards the forearm, dominated by a large red poppy and a blue-grey daisy-like bloom with a dark centre. Green and olive leaves, smaller flower heads and fine swirling vines fill the gaps, with soft shading on the petals and leaves. The arm is shown at an angle against a plain, warm-toned background, with the wearer's striped top visible at the left.

Dear Tom,

The fair pulled into the rec ground at Carlow Green on Tuesday, and by Wednesday every wagon had a rim of poppies along its skirting where the wind had blown the seed in from the railway cutting. Mr Haddon says they are weeds and should be scythed, but he said the same about the daisies, and he has not got them out of the ground since 1921. Yesterday I walked out past the dodgems with a jam jar and came back with more than I could carry, which is how I ended up at the ticket hut with my arms full of red and blue and a bramble caught on my cardigan.
Mother would have laughed. The palm reader on the Saturday stall took one look at the heap of them and asked whether I meant to sell them or set fire to them. I told her neither, I meant to stand them in the water tank behind the Wall of Death, where Joseph keeps his bike in the afternoons. She said flowers like that do not last a day in a tank, and she was right, they went limp by teatime, but Joseph tucked a sprig behind his ear anyway and rode the wall with it still there, petals flicking off the lip of the drum like sparks.
We pull out on Sunday for Hexham. I have decided to keep one poppy, pressed flat between the pages of an old Gazette, and I shall send it to you with this letter so you can see the colour before it goes brown. Keep it somewhere dark. Do not let the cat near it.
Love, Nell
