Galaxy and planets full arm sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The sleeve shows a spiral galaxy at the top, with a spacecraft, cratered planets and a glowing orange asteroid lower down. The planets and rocks are rendered with soft shading and fine detail, while the background uses smooth, blended washes of teal, purple, pink and orange to suggest a nebula. The four panels show the arm from the front, side and back, with the tattoo filling the full length of the sleeve.

Marguerite had her hand inside the projector housing when the generator coughed and the stars went out. Forty people stood in the mud of the Wetherby field, staring up at a canvas that had gone grey and sagging, and nobody knew what to do next. The Sable Brothers' Travelling Cosmos had never once played without its sky.

The projector was a brass thing the size of a church bell, bought from a Leeds planetarium that had shut in 1979. It threw a spiral galaxy onto the inside of the big top, then a cratered moon, then a rust-coloured rock that turned slowly while the band played something soft on fiddle and accordion. Desmond, the ringmaster, had wanted fire-eaters and a strongman. Marguerite had wanted the sky, and for six summers she had got it.

She found the fault by torchlight, fingers numb, following a loom of cable to a wire gone green at the joint. She taped it with the same black tape she used on her trapeze rigging. When the fans spun up again, a silver spacecraft drifted across the canvas with its running lights blinking, and a boy in the front row gasped as if he had never seen anything so astonishing in his life.

Afterwards Desmond counted the takings in his caravan and said the tour would finish in Harrogate. Marguerite lay on the wet grass with the projector humming behind her. Above the tent, the orange asteroid still turned on the canvas, and she decided the next town could wait for daylight.
