Five-panel photo of a full sleeve realism tattoo on an arm, showing galaxies, a ringed planet, a red glowing nebula and rocky asteroids from the shoulder to the wrist.

Space scene full sleeve on an arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The collage shows a full arm sleeve depicting outer space, with swirling spiral galaxies and a dense star field across the upper arm. A ringed planet, a red glowing nebula and cratered planetary surfaces sit on the forearm, and grey rocky asteroids fill the lower part of the sleeve near the wrist. The shading is smooth and painterly, with rich blues, purples and reds set against dark, deep backgrounds.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomas Ruadh shot his net for nine nights off the Sound of Harris and hauled up nothing but cold brine and a tangle of weed. On the tenth night the skipper's daughter, Ailsa, climbed to the bow with a lamp and pointed at the sky instead of the water. The sea had gone quiet, and the pale road of stars lay across it like a wet rope.

They paid the net out over the stern and it sank past the lamplight, down through a blue smoke where the water was no longer water but dust. The mesh filled with small cold lights. Then something heavy bit: a ringed fish, banded like a buoy, its belly the colour of old pewter. It pulled the boat round in a slow circle until the lamps went out one by one. Ailsa said to haul. Tomas said to cut. They hauled.

Up through the dark came a red glow, like a lantern in the window of a drowned bothy, and the net split open at its heart. Grey stones tumbled into the hold with a sound like shale on a beach, cratered and cold, each one a little moon with its own dead face. The ringed fish slid out through the gap, unhurt, and went back into the road of stars without a splash.

Tomas kept three of the stones on the windowsill of his cottage. When the herring ran thin after that, he would take one down, turn it in his palm and feel for the ridge of the ring. The boats still went out at dusk, but they never again cast their nets where the sky was thickest.
