Space scene leg sleeve with planets and nebula

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The image shows several views of a full leg sleeve depicting outer space, set against a black background. Ringed and banded planets, including a Saturn-like body and a Jupiter-like body, sit among smooth blue, pink and orange nebula clouds and scattered stars. The shading is soft and blended, giving a realistic, painterly finish with colour ink dominating the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the last week of August the windfalls had gone soft in the grass under the Bramley trees, and my uncle Ray had given up pretending he could fix the broken hose. He dragged two deckchairs to the far end of the orchard, where the wall was lowest, and told me to lie still and stop swatting wasps.

Nobody had warned me about the sky. Above the hedge the dark came down thick and blue, and then the planets appeared one by one, like lamps being lit in a house across the valley. Ray pointed out a banded one he called Gran's Teacup. It was Jupiter, he said, and I believed him because he had worked the cargo ships out of Hull before he came back to farm. Further along the ridge a ringed planet hung with its belt tilted, pale and patient, and he said it looked like a bangle someone had dropped in a pond and forgotten.

The turn came when the first meteor cut across the cloud of pink and violet dust above the church tower. Ray swore, then laughed, because he had bet me a fiver it would not happen before midnight. I said the sky owed me nothing. He said the sky owed everybody a look. We counted eleven before the dew soaked through our jumpers, and each one left a smear of colour that hung a second too long.

On the walk back I picked a bruised apple out of the grass. It was cold as a moon rock in my palm. I put it in my pocket anyway, and Ray took the deckchairs under one arm and said the trees would be bare by October, which was fine, because we had already seen the sky.
