Galaxy head with planets on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A dark head silhouette with short swept hair forms the subject, with a collar and tie drawn beneath it. Inside the head sit Saturn, a banded orange planet and a blue-green planet, surrounded by scattered stars and a glowing nebula. Black and grey shading defines the hair, collar and tie, while the planets and nebula use bright colour, and the design is centred on the forearm.

The pass above Halvard was so narrow the goats had to be counted through by name, and so the clerk at the toll hut kept his tally in chalk on the lintel. Nobody knew his real name. They called him Collar, because he came down to market every week in a starched shirt buttoned to the throat and a tie knotted so tight his voice came out thin. He said the sky was his ledger and he kept it in his head.

One winter the snow shut the pass for forty days. Carters sheltered in the hut and grew restless, and Collar talked to them through the long nights about Saturn, which he said wore its rings like a grudge, and about a great banded world that turned faster than any man could walk. A carter's daughter, Mirren Brenn, laughed at him and asked where the moon was kept. He tipped his head back, and the lamplight ran over the dark dome of him, and he told her the stars were knocking to get out if she listened closely enough.
When the thaw came, the tally on the lintel was gone. In its place were chalk circles, one for each planet, and a small blue-green world drawn in the corner where the count should have been. Collar's tie lay folded on the threshold stone, neat as a letter. Mirren took the chalk and counted the goats through the pass by the stars that were still up at dawn, and she got every one of them right.
