It is in my coat pocket, a sailor's bend gone soft from handling, and I work it loose when I cannot sleep. Mother thinks it is bad luck to carry a thing that holds nothing. I told her it holds the two of us, which she did not find funny.

Last night the birds came down over the platform in a black line, and then the first star showed above the water tower. In the window of the waiting room I could see two faces laid over the sunset, one behind the other, and I thought of you pressing your nose to the glass of the carriage the day you went. I know it is only the glass and the lamp behind it. Still I stood there until the porter rang the bell for the last train.
