Colourful geometric tattoo on an upper arm showing a black triangular shape with a ringed planet, stars and a moon, above a prism beaming a rainbow.

Ringed planet and rainbow prism on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a dark, triangular night-sky shape containing a white ringed planet, a small moon and several stars, with a rounded top edge. Below it, a prism-like form releases a rainbow beam that carries a small sphere and a second moon-like dot. The linework is crisp and solid, with soft gradients in the rainbow and the coloured triangle, and the design sits centrally on the arm against a plain skin tone and a blurred background.

Dear Nell, the stove door is open for the warmth and the only light I have, so forgive the smudges. Mr Okonedo, the bosun, swears the prism in my kit bag is bad luck at sea, but I told him it was your gift and bad luck would have to take a number and wait its turn.

You will remember the old lamp-maker on Hollin Quay, who sold me that triangle of glass for a shilling and a promise to bring back a picture of a planet I could not name. Last night, off the Azores, the sky cleared so hard the stars looked cut from tin. I held the glass to the lamp, as he showed me, and the light split and ran across the galley wall in a rainbow as wide as my hand. Two of the hands came down from the watch to see it, and Pim, who has never once been quiet, went silent.

I had no picture, so I drew what I could. A black sky, a ringed world tilted like a hat, a small moon keeping it company. Under the glass I put the beam, and a blue marble to carry it. Pim said it looked like a lighthouse had lost its nerve. I think it looks like the sky leaning down to hand us something.

The ship makes Lisbon on Thursday. I will post this there, and I will buy you a proper prism, a better one, and hold it up to the tram window so you can watch the colours leave the glass. Keep the drawing safe. Tell your mother the stove has been kind to me and I have not burned the bread this week. Your loving father, Tom.
