You reach the stile at Hollin Wood just as the lamp in Mrs Pyle's window goes dark, and the sky over the beeches is turning the colour of a bruise going to blue. Your brother has bet you a penny that you will not climb the oak with the broken top and say what you see up there. You take the bet because you have never once backed down from a dare, and because the moon has already slid behind a cloud shaped like a swirl of cream.

The oak is wet and cold under your palms. Halfway up the branches thin out and the whole sky opens, and you see what the village has never bothered to tell you: a river of stars turning slowly over the wood, with dust the colour of rust and coals banked beneath it like a fire left for the night. Low on the horizon a pale ringed planet hangs as neatly as a coin on a string. Something moves in the dust, a small figure in a white suit with one arm raised, as if to hail a boat or the girl in the oak.

You wave back. You are not sure why. The figure does not wave, but a star slips from the edge of the spiral and goes out, and the wood below gives a long, contented sigh.

When you climb down, Tom is waiting at the stile with the penny already in his fist. "Well?" he says. You open your mouth to tell him, then close it again. Some things you keep, the way the sky keeps its distances, and you hold out your hand for the penny without a word.
