The lights were supposed to come in September, the radio had said so, but nobody on the night shift at Raigmore Ward expected much from a Highland sky. At ten past three Nell pushed the linen trolley past the bay of sleeping men and found the north window at the end of the corridor already glowing green.

From the fire door you could see the ridge above the car park, a row of peaks with snow still in their gullies, and above them the sky had begun to move. Bands of colour unspooled slowly, green first, then violet, then a pink so pale it looked like steam off a kettle. Nell stood with her hand on the bar of the door until the cold came in and made her shiver.

Mrs Adair in bed seven had woken, and when Nell came back for the blood pressure cuff the old woman was staring at the ceiling as if it were a window. "Is it the aurora?" she asked. "Don Adair used to say the sky was rolling up its sleeves." Nell wheeled her chair to the window, tucked the blanket round her knees, and they watched the colours fold over each other while the monitor at the nurses' station chirped twice somewhere down the hall.

When the bell for bed nine rang, Nell had to go, but she came back once more before handover. The sky was thinning to grey at the edges and the stars were coming through in the dark gaps. On the observations sheet, under Mrs Adair's temperature and pulse, she wrote in small neat capitals: SKY GREEN, PURPLE, PINK. PATIENT CALM. NO CONCERNS.
