Gamer Forever weapons emblem
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A central emblem of swords, axes and blades fans outwards, with a red heart on a scroll banner reading Gamer Forever. Below the banner sit a game controller and a Pokeball, with blue and orange highlights on some of the blades. The bold outlines and shaded fills sit on a dark, textured background, centred in the frame.

Nobody brings a whole arsenal into the repair shop under the pier unless they have lost an argument with the sea. Mrs Abernethy came in on a wet Tuesday with a carrier bag and tipped it onto my bench: a grey controller with the thumbsticks worn to pale rings, a Pokeball the size of a plum with its seam split, and a rolled-up sheet of card she unrolled like a map. Dennis drew it, she said. It took him all winter at the kitchen table, the swords and axes fanned out behind a red heart, and along the banner, in careful capitals, GAMER FOREVER.

Dennis had been the terror of the amusement arcade in the summers of 1989 and 1990, she told me, the one who finished every cabinet on a single coin. He kept a notebook of cheat codes and never once shared them. When the arcade shut he carried the cabinets home in his head and played them out on the shingle, a blade in one hand and a dead controller in the other, while the gulls looked on unimpressed.
I told her the board had gone and the controller would never light up again. She nodded like someone who had expected it. Then she asked me to keep the Pokeball for the grandson, who would come on Saturday and ask for it by name. I rolled the card back up with the heart facing out and returned it to the bag.
The shop smelled of solder and salt until closing. Before I switched off the lamp I pressed the old thumbstick once, and it clicked.
